I’ve made josephmclaughl.in my home on the internet for over ten years, hosting many iterations of my blog and personal website there.
This year, I received an email letting me know that, in order to comply with new regulations imposed by India, I’d need to provide documentation proving my (or my website’s) relationship to India if I wanted to keep the domain.
I’m aware this kind of thing has happened before. The .io situation caused a lot of disruption for people, but now that it’s affecting me specifically, it’s made me reflect on how absurd this whole arrangement can be. I’ve paid my rent on time for over a decade, built up some search placement, and grown this domain into my own little corner of the internet. Now I’m being kicked out of my own home.
I doubt anyone in India needs my domain. I’m not publishing anything that would be objectionable to the country or leadership of India, and I haven’t stopped paying my rent, but I’m still being forced to relocate.
I’m still setting things up, but my new home on the web will be at josephmc.la/ughlin and joemc.la/ughlin, as well as my existing site at joemc.xyz.
Unfortunately, I won’t have a permanent forwarding address from this domain, so update your RSS subscriptions and/or bookmarks. Catch you on the other side!
